There are certain foods that many people are highly allergic to including:
- Eggs
- Dairy
- Wheat
- Soy
- Shellfish
- Fish
- Peanuts
- Tree nuts, etc.
These known allergic reactions led to the idea that avoiding foods that invoke antibody responses may help IBS patients. Based on this strategy, IBS patients are instructed to eliminate foods from their diet based on extensive antibody testing. Unfortunately, this approach has not proven very effective.
A randomized controlled study with 150 IBS patients, showed only a small (10%) improvement.
The best overall approach to SIBO/IBS in my opinion is to control hard-to-digest fermentable dietary carbohydrates that promote SIBO while identifying and addressing other potential underlying causes that can contribute to this condition if present. This is the approach embraced by the Fast Tract Diet.
